New Year’s Resolutions for our Studio
No. 1: Get hyper-organized
We know this is the most boring resolution of them all. For us right-brained folks, the word “paperwork” sends a shiver down our spines. However, once it’s all organized it’s like a breath of fresh, mountain air.
Our goal at Coast to Coast Studio is to start printing out all contracts and invoices. Though we have them digitally stored, we want an extra copy of everything for our file cabinet. This will make it easier to keep track of our income, past clients, and in case the internet somehow blows up, we’ll be ready to go.
We also want to streamline some of our processes. Whether it be creating a better creative process for our clients or having a more thought-out to-do list, it’s important that we aren’t wasting any time. We just bought a whiteboard to lay out our current clients, potential clients, blog ideas, and to-dos. It’s important that we have a constant visual reminder so that we can simply glance over and know what’s on the horizon.
No. 2: Don’t work until we feel like zombies
This is a resolution every entrepreneur, business owner, creative, and the career-driven person can relate to. Do you ever work so long that your eyes are watering, your computer is swirling, and you can’t have a functional conversation with your partner/roommates when you get home? This is us to a T. We swear by the end of the day, we are speaking a language only the two of us understand – it’s a perfect combination of mumbles and swear words.
Working hard is crucial, overworking is detrimental. It’s our goal this upcoming year to know when to stop. Sometimes working a 9-5 day is unproductive because from hours 3-5 you aren’t producing your best work. There’s nothing more important to us than creating designs we’re completely proud of and working until our eyes bleed is not the best way to pump out beautiful images.
Fortunately, we love our line of work so much, which is why it’s hard for us to leave the studio before 7 PM. However, we want to make it a priority to take time for self-care, our relationships, and seeking inspiration. That way we come into the studio completely refreshed and ready to create something extraordinary.
No. 3: Do a pro-bono project for an organization we care deeply about
One of the reasons we started Coast to Coast Studio was to give back to small businesses and causes that are important to us. In 2018, we want to donate a project to an organization that needs our help.
Graphic design is a great way to spread a message – however, it may be out of a smaller organization’s budget. If you’ve worked with us before, you know how important it is to work within our clients’ budgets. We want graphic design to be accessible to anyone who wants their business to grow. That’s why it’s our goal this year to donate our time, design skills, and creativity to an organization that could use a little boost.
Whether it be a graphic to use on social media, a mailer, a poster, or any form of marketing collateral, we’re here to help. If you’re a non-profit reading this, shoot us over an email!
No. 4: Devote our time in office to helping our clients’ businesses grow
As creatives, we tend to get caught up on the design itself – but this year we not only want to perfect the design, we also want to keep in mind the various ways it can help the client’s business excel.
For example, we could create the most perfect logo in the history of logos, but if it doesn’t draw in their dream customer/clientele, what’s the point? When we’re designing brand identities and websites for our clients in 2018, we want to keep a deeper business perspective in mind.
While doing market research for our clients, we always come up with a list of ways we think they could pass up their competitors, get more sales/contracts, and enhance their business model. These are all things we implement into their branding – however, we’d love to do more business consulting. We’d love to hand over our list of positive suggestions for our clients to implement, instead of keeping the list to ourselves to use for the design process.
At Coast to Coast Studio, there’s nothing we love more than working with small businesses trying to get their feet off the ground and we’d love to offer creative consultation to people who are ready for success.
No. 5: Constantly read, research, and get inspired by all things design
The two of us are always looking to expand our design book collection. We’re constantly going to our mini library to get inspired before designing (see some of our favorite design books here.) This upcoming year, we not only want to expand our library, we also want to soak in a little inspiration from everywhere.
On our lunch breaks, we want to explore more art galleries, furniture showrooms, and bookstores. We also want to take more trips abroad to bring in a new culture, colors, and foreign influence into our future designs. So far, Paige has a trip booked to Copenhagen, Denmark and Lucy is going to schedule her Birthright trip to Israel. Through traveling, we can gain fresh insight and inspiration instead of getting caught up in the same loop or routine. Design is everywhere, we want to make sure we’re paying attention.
